Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Joe Astray

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER is one of the most unique and colourful metal bands in Germany. They originate from Thuringia, Germany, and were founded 20 years ago. The band, looking back on eight full albums, is now on the road for their first unplugged tour ever which is the logic result of their first unplugged record featured on their double long-player ‘tief, tiefer’ released in May 2014. The Chirstuskirche as location is often visited by rock and metal bands for acoustic concerts.

Joe Astray

The support act JOE ASTRAY is a guy born in Sydney who is now living in Germany. The self-called acoustic-folk-punk singer / songwriter music is supported by a drummer. Joe sings in his special way about his look at the world he is living in. https://www.facebook.com/yourastray / www.joeastray.com

Music & Performance
It is hard to be opener for DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER. I think JOE ASTRAY was not the best choice in this case because most people of the audience were from the metal scene. The church is too big for this kind of music, a smaller location would be better for him. On the other hand-side Joe and his companion were doing their best and Joe is an enthusiastic and charismatic singer and performer. Standing there with his guitar and giving his best, Joe gets the sympathy of the audience. The seven songs were quiet cheesy though but entertaining.

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter

The live veterans DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, who rose up from zero to hero by hard work and an amount of luck, are here on a totally new level of their band history. It is quite exciting to watch them in their musically evolution. Starting as an extreme Metal band with roots in Black/ Death/ Grind they teared down all musically borders and are now performing live unplugged in a church. http://www.reitermania.de / http://www.twitter.com/reitermania

Music & Performance
When the five musicians called DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER entered the stage they created a special atmosphere of profession and music-loving ecstasy. All were sitting on chairs playing their instruments. The very well-dressed men were looking very concentrated. Only the vocalist got on his feet from time to time and even climbed on his seat. It was amazing how good the songs were in their unplugged versions, the deep and clear voice of vocalist Fuchs is perfect for this kind of performance and the lyrics have their message in both song versions. It seemed a little weird though to sit in a church and listen to a band to whose songs you normally bang and mosh to and yell out their lyrics.

After one hour of sitting and listening, the singer gave the audience the order to get up from their seats and do some action; the party part of the concert began with songs like ‘Riders in the sky’, ‘Dschingis Kahn’ and ‘Friede sei mit dir’. Band and audience celebrated this evening with a lot of fun and smiling. Finally it was time to chill out with ‘Lazy Day’ where some people really were laying down on the floor of the church. Finally it is to say that it was a good thing which needs to be done again, unplugged concerts of DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER are a very chilling and fascinating event which gives the band another shade without losing their roots. Finally I have to say that the Christuskirche is an amazing location.
