Halle Münsterland, Münster, Germany
5th April 2007
Bob Dylan

On Saturday, 5th April I took the chance to visit a show of BOB DYLAN, one of the greatest and most famous singer and songwriter of the last century. In the last five decades Robert Allan Zimmerman - better known as the legendary BOB DYLAN - had released 44 albums and played thousands of concerts all over the world, some of his songs were sung at countless campfires and his name is a synonym for a whole style of music. His latest album release is called ‘Modern Times’ and was released last year. http://www.bobdylan.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/bobdylan

The concert took place in Münster in the Halle Münsterland, a nice and quite small location with a capacity of 6.500 persons. The location was not sold out but filled very well and the spirit in the location was relaxed. It was my first concert of BOB DYLAN ever and I was curious about the show. A support band wasn’t scheduled and the evening was opened directly by the master himself.

Music
As usual BOB DYLAN on stage was supported by "his band". Current band members are Tony Garnier (bass), George Recile (drums), Stu Kimball (rhythm guitar), Denny Freeman (lead guitar) and Donnie Herron (banjo, electric mandolin, violin, pedal steel, lap steel). BOB DYLAN himself played electric guitar, keyboard and harp. They all together produced a very good sound - bracing and agile all the time. The setlist was a little surprising for me, because I missed the greatest hit of Bob Dylan – ‘Blowing in the Wind" which wasn't played on this evening. The main set ran about 100 minutes, started by ‘Cat's in the Well’, followed by 14 songs taken from different periods of his own musical history and finished by the well-known ‘Like a Rolling Stone’. At the start of the second song ‘Don't Think Twice’, the band was a little bit confused because obviously they were prepared for another song, but Bob was playing the chords of ‘Don't Think Twice’ and he was simply playing on and on - and finally everyone joined in. The rest of the show proceeded smooth and after the last song of the main set the audience requested an encore which was given with two songs.

Performance
BOB DYLAN entered the stage right at 19:30, clothed into a black suit and a white hat. At the first four songs he played the guitar, after them he turned to the keyboard and at the rest of the show he played keyboard and at some songs additional harp. The keyboard was arranged 90° to the audience and so at the most part of the show the audience had a look to the side of BOB DYLAN. The heart of the show was the music, not any kind of entertaining on stage - the songs were arranged one after the other and between the songs the light was turned off. The lightshow was limited to a static colored background and spotlights onto the musicians. Bob didn't run and dance on stage and he didn't respond to the audience, rather he renounced some show effects and concentrated only to the music. Altogether it was a solid show with a little bit campfire feeling, presented by an ingenious singer and songwriter BOB DYLAN and his band. The audience - mostly consisting of higher age class - was happy and excited; they were nodding and singing along and here and there you could note wads of smoke smell of cannabis.
