Deine Lakaien

Deine Lakaien are an exceptional appearance in Germany's music landscape. Their music, which tastefully and self-assuredly balances between classic, folk, techno, rock, industrial, goth, wave and ambient soundscapes, does not follow any current trends and is not oriented on any commercial guidelines whatsoever. And yet, the charismatic vocalist Alexander Veljanov and the classically trained composer, pianist and drummer Ernst Horn together experience a huge success with their concept of ignoring the borders set by genres and cultures. Three years after their last release "White Lies", the duet is now ready to open a fascinating new chapter in their career, with their eighth studio album, "April Skies", which also celebrates the artists' start with Capitol.

It was raining cats and dogs all the day and it got even worse when I started my ride to Dortmund. When I arrived at the venue, I had to drive my car through deep holes filled with water to find a place to park my car. I really wonder how I made it with dry feet to the doors. Even though there was such a bad weather, people were waiting long before opening in front of the doors and the queue grew until 7 when the "Soundgarden" opened.

Music
The show started with a stage covered in the dark and only lightened by a few blue lights. Deine Lakaien consists only of Alexander Veljanow and Ernst Horn. For the tour they filled up the line-up with 4 more people: 2 girls on the violins, and 2 guys on chello and guitar. First, only the band without the vocalist Alexander entered the stage while Alexander´s voice could be heared from the back. He went out of the dark at the beginning of the second song and actual single "Over and done". The sound at the venue was quite good but it was a bit disturbed when standing on the gallery due a very loud climatisation. As in the shows before, the band changed between older songs and songe from the new album as well as between acoustic songs and songs performed by the whole band. Of course the show was dominated by the strong voice of Alexander. But the additional intruments added a lot to the music too.

Performance
As usually, Deine Lakaien performances are not that vivid. In the past I´ve seen very good and very boring shows of the band. The show at Dortmund did not belong to the best I´ve ever seen of them, but also wasn´t the worst. But I had kind of feeling that Alexander was a bit bored that day. On the other side the band tried to get some life onto the stage. Even I wasn´t that convinced by the show, the audience seemed very satisfied... listening deeply moved by the music and applausing honestly after every single song. The lights were fitting very well to the dark music, creating a certain mood to every song. The so-to-say highlights of the show for me and many others as well were the older songs like "Generators", "Dark Star" or the touching "Love me to the end".
