Deine Lakaien, Misiery

It's not that often that Deine Lakaien plays in the Netherlands, but today they had transformed the big hall of 013 into their own Avantgarde theatre. Unfortunately their support act Lola Angst had to cancel due to injuries, but Dutch Misery took over to warm up the people for the band of Horn and Veljanov.

Misery

Established some 10 years ago by three guys, but since 2000 they have a female singer Lis. While the trio released their first demo in 2003 the male vocals had been gone and right at the beginning of this year guitarist Edwin left the band to be replaced by keyboarder Maarten. They are very busy releasing a new album to be released this year.

Music
Misery is a small band from the north of the Netherlands and has been one of the few electro bands that plays lager clubs every now and then. Singer Lis is definitely feeling good on stage where she's singing to the tunes played by Alain and Maarten on keys. Songs they play are a mix of the ones from the debut album 'Nexus' as well as some new songs. Unfortunately Lis wasn't singing at her best all the time but still the band managed to entertain the people who were waiting for the headliner to give their show. Although the mix was okay, it seemed like the type of music didn't grab the audience who were clearly in the mood for something more dark wave instead of electro.

Performance
With both men statically behind the keys, just moving a bit behind it, performance became the main task for Lis. And with her looks and moves it's not that easy to give the audience something to look at. Her dancing and moving up and down the stage made it a vivid show combined with the lights and some dress dolls on stage the Misery show was not a bad support for the masters of Deine Lakaien.

Deine Lakaien

It's been 20 years since the music conductor Ernst Horn and singer Alexander Veljanov met through an advert. They decided to make some music together leading up the 20th anniversary of Deine Lakeien in 2007. Time to celebrate and to do this they've mounted a big tour. With 20 years of music it's time again for them to visit the Netherlands. In the cosy 013 where tables and chairs had been set down for the audience they gave the Dutch an intimate party.

Music
When you've been on stage and writing music for so long as this band you'll end up with so many songs that you can play during your anniversary. 12 albums of which 2 live cds, some singles and dvds, the band played a bit from every period they made albums in. Of course this means you'll end up with a lot of happy faces in the crowds but people also miss out on some of their favourites. But all in all there was more than enough to go around for everybody. The musical performance of the band, playing guitar, violin and cello was very good, and of course the keys played by Ernst gave it all the right ambiance. But no matter how good the music is, it can all be strengthened or weakened by the vocals. But with Alexander there's no need to worry, his voice was nice and deep and very clear in the mix. This made sure the audience got to hear the band's music at it's best, and it was even possible to listen without earplugs. Not too loud and a mix that had detailed sound coming from every instrument made this an example of how bands should sound. Maybe there were a bit many slow songs, but the whole set was a good representation of the band's 20 year history.

Performance
And like with the music, the performance was nicely orchestrated as well. A great lightshow that really supported the mood of the songs, plenty of light to see all the action on stage, a treat for spoiled concert vistors. But there was more; Alexander made sure he kept on making contact with the audience at times while withdrawing into the music at others. The band didn't just play some fine music, they also moved to the sound in a choreographed way. Maybe it was just too bad Ernst Horn was a bit hidden for most of the concert with all his older electronics facing away from the audience, but every now and then he too faced the crowd to see the effects of the music. There wasn't too much to complain about, Deine Lakaien gave a great memorable show, something that was a true celebration of 20 years of Electronic Avantgarde.
