Halle Münsterland, Münster, Germany

Die Ärzte

The current album ‘Jazz ist anders’ is spiked again with splendid texted songs which are going directly into the ears and legs and that are destined for eternity. “Electric Guitars” and “Noise” aren't accidentally keywords of the first single ‘Junge’ according to what DIE ÄRZTE are writing on their homepage and accordingly almost every concert of the recent tour was sold-out in a few days. The “best band of the world”, as DIE ÄRZTE call themselves, were guests at the sold-out Halle Münsterland and we were part of the party.

DIE ÄRZTE are a band from Berlin/ Germany who’s music style lays somewhere between punk-rock and pop. They see themselves as a parody onto the pop world and call themselves “The best band of the world”. Since more than 20 years millions of fans are crazy about that band. After a best-of release in 2006, the latest studio album ‘Jazz ist anders’ was released in 2007 followed by several singe releases, and en extensive tour which is still going on. DIE ÄRZTE are Farin Urlaub (guitar, vocals), Bela B. (drums, vocals) and Rod Gonzales (bass, vocals). http://www.bademeister.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/dieaerztesupport / http://www.myspace.com/aerzte

Music & Performance

Just in time, at 8 o'clock the light went down in the Halle Münsterland which was sold out and well-filled. The stage was hidden behind a black curtain with a big lettering "ACHTUNG JAZZ" (attention jazz) related to the current album ‘Jazzfässt’ (which means jazz party), the title of this tour too. The band entered the stage and began to play the intro still hidden behind the curtain before this one dropped and the stage was revealed. As usual, Bela B. was standing behind this drum set in the centre of the stage, this time he was dressed in an uniform like a pilot, Farin Urlaub played his guitar at the left side and Rodrigo Gonzales played the bass on the right side; later at the show, Farin and Rod changed the places for some songs.

DIE ÄRZTE is not a band with only one singer, one guitar player and one bass player, all three band members are multi-functional musicians and this time, all three took over the vocal parts at several songs too, Farin and Rodrigo changed bass and guitar for some songs and at the song ‘Der Graf’, Bela B. played the guitar at the first part of the song before he changed to his drums for the rest of the song. Bela B. is not just a drummer who stays sitting behind his drum set; rather he was walking across the stage between the drum parts and was talking and joking between the songs and sometimes during the songs as well.

Like usually, the fans donated a lot of brassieres to the band and they collected these and decorated the instruments with it. The crowd was infected quickly and from the very first until the end of the show the whole crowd was dancing, jumping, clapping hands and singing along. Like usual at a concert of DIE ÄRZTE, people were crowd surfing, moshing and built some “walls of death”; the band supported this and animated the crowd to do so. Between the songs, Farin, Bela and Rod talked to the audience and did some jokes - as always, furthermore they animated the crowd to waves and sitting waves. During the song ‘Radio brennt’, Bela played two bongos which were brought to the stage only during the song. The setlist included - besides songs of the current album like ‘Himmelblau’, ‘Heulerei’ or ‘Junge’ - a good choice of songs from different periods of the band history. The main set finished with ‘Rebell’ and the band left the stage, but of course the crowd requested encores and they came back three times and finally after ‘Zu spät’ they finished and the outro was played from tape.
