Ampere, Munich, Germany
26th February 2009
Anne Clark

In 26th February it was time for me to see ANNE CLARK on her current tour. Her first recording was 'The Sitting Room' in 1982, and she has released about a dozen albums since then. Her experimental music occupies a region bounded roughly by electronic, dance (techno applies on occasion) and possibly avant-garde genres, with varying hard as well as romantic and orchestral styles.

ANNE CLARK is a British songwriter, singer and pianist whose creating is added to the category "Spoken Word", that means, she does not sing, but reports her poetic texts rather rhythmically spoken. Stylistically, her works is electronic music with partly rock-, dance-, folk- as well as also avant-garde classical period elements. In 2008 she published her latest CD ‘The Smallest Acts Of Kindness’ and in the course of her tour which bears the same name, she came now also to Munich to the sold out Ampere. http://www.anneclark.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/anneclark

Music & Performance
At 20.45 o'clock ANNE CLARK and her band, consisting of Jeff Aug (guitar), Niko Lai (percussion/drums), Murat Parlak (piano), Jann Michael Engel (cello) and Rainer von Vielen (electronics/vocals) entered the stage. There was no support act. Anne began the show with the song ‘If’ out off her new album. However, in the following she gave also older songs, as for example the hymn ‘Sleeper in Metropolis’ which has gained her much success in 1984, ‘Wallies’, and ‘Counter Act’.

After ‘Prayer before Birth’, ANNE CLARK left the stage for Rainer von Vielen, a German musician and singer, and his drummer, Niko Lai, for two of his own compositions. His works are not easy to access, but they are exceptionally fascinating: He controls his voice and brings out tunes which remind of an Australian Didgeridoo just as the overtone song. The audience expressed its enthusiasm in blustering applause. Following that Murat Parlak and Niko Lai played the track ‘Zest’ of the last album without Anne, before the complete band with Anne entered the stage again and continued in the programme. After four additions and just two hour show, this ended with the rousing ‘Our Darkness’.

The concert offered a successful mixture of danceable songs and quieter distances for listening, reflexion and enjoyment. Anne dominated the evening with her radiation and the listeners in her spell moving speech song. Not to forget, however, also the brilliant musicians who made the show together with Anne becoming a highlight - completely without any big show elements and lightshow!
