Album Review

IMPERATIVE REACTION, American band founded in 1996, released five studio albums; each of them had its success. Starting with simple electronics, the band conquered clubs and won the audience. The early success of such hits as ‘Scorpio’ and ‘The Longing’ was caught up by ‘Giving In To The Change’ from the following album, and so on. Since the release of the debut album, band’s line-up has been changed a lot. Today it looks quite impressive: Besides the band-founder Ted Phelps there is Clint Carney (SYSTEM SIN, GOD MODULE), Trevor Friedrich (COMBICHRIST), Adam Vex (SERAPHIM SHOCK), the latter joined the band in 2008, before their shared tour with PSYCLON NINE.

Around 2010, Phelps decided to start all over again, and together with the refreshed membership he recorded brand new album. Since the self-called record is considered to be the new beginning; it would make lack of sense to compare it with previous works. Now IMPERATIVE REACTION sounds more original, rock and brutal. With guitars, the previously pure electronic band sounds more live and energetic. Even if sometimes Phelps’ vocals recall pretty much Tom Shear’s (ASSEMBLAGE 23) melancholic manner, most of the time he sings so loud, like he wants to jump out from your headphones and make the whole street dance. But what impressed even more, that behind this loud electronic rock there are nice thoughtful lyrics.

The first single ‘Surface’ with such tracks as opening ‘Side-Effect’ or ‘Song Of The Martyr’ and ‘Siphon’ create a nice dancing backbone of the album. There are a lot of options for DJs to set their playlists up. For those, who prefer to enjoy music at home alone, four Californians also have something to show, as for example ‘What Is Left To Say’. All in all IMPERATIVE REACTION makes a great musical breakthrough with their new album. They opened electronic boundaries and let a rock demon out. So if you’re bored with classical Future Pop and alternative electronic don’t miss this album.
