And here’s another one from the Icelandic community of singer/songwriters… but this time, it’s a real Jack of all trades! Playing roundabout 7 instruments, composer and arranger for TINA DICO and the NATIONAL DANISH ORCHESTRA OF CHAMBER MUSIC, being on tour with TEITUR and SIGUR RÓS: that’s HELGI JÒNSSON! And as if that was not enough this guy is a member of the Label ‘Bedroom Community’ as a singer and trombonist that had its peak in touring all over Europe with their “Whale Watching Tour” in 2010. Pretty much to do for a guy that besides to all of these activities is running its very own self-titled project. And just like in all cases of Icelandic music, I’m still wondering and listening like a child with mouth wide opened and shimmering eyes due to the beauty of the masterpiece of music that is overwhelming me. It seems, that the landscape is inspiring in such a way that all these musicians can borrow its beauty in order to create diamonds of music.
So does HELGI JÓNSSON with his work ‘Bis Spring’ in a very special way: It’s not only that typical singer/songwriter release one would expect to listen to. Due to his experiences with several artists and his arrangement for chamber music, he is capable to emphasize his kind of music beyond all of these innumerable bands that are flooding the genre. Whether it’s his arrangements of strings in the beginning, his beautiful voice and the extraordinary pulchritude of the soft tunes played by guitar and piano, the placement of horns and trombones during the songs or the interaction of all of that that is developing till the end of this release and emerging in a ‘Grande Finale’, just to let one almost drown with a certain loneliness with the last tones that are dying away… HELGI JÓNSSON gave birth to a masterpiece that must not hide beside all the great names his country put forth. As a member and co-worker to almost all of them, he showed certain qualities, but now he’s showing again, what he’s capable to do on his own… and that’s definitely worth more than a random listening!
