Album Review

6 year old Norwegian band GAZPACHO recorded a live album from their Camden, London, show. An album which follows a few critically acclaimed productions by the childhood friends; an album that does not disappoint. The only thing disappointing about this album was that I didn't know they put on this show and wish I was there to have seen it and experience the sound live. The two disk record kicks off with a long and building introduction, but as soon as it kick into 'Defense Mechanism' the real power behind the band's previous successes comes into play. The music steps aside for the vocals to come in, which they need to because such a voice takes all the attention of the listeners. the chorus' become heavier with some distorted guitars playing simple chords but reinforcing the strong feel of the voice.

As the album continues the music becomes slower; more delicate and haunting. 'Snail' is one of these tracks. Guitar distortion becomes unimportant with the clean riff/solo lines that are occasionally placed for intervals, and organ style keyboard chords in the background compliment the string section. 'Chequered Light Buildings' continues this style, but replaces the organ with the piano, and the vocals become smoother and we almost feel the pain in the lyrics. This is something they do very well; making you feel every single moment.

The track 'River' echoes the sounds of RADIOHEAD with the solitary piano entrance to the song, but it's when the heavier chorus kicks in and the harsher sounding melody line that brings Muse into the obvious influences for GAZPACHO. Cutting out the subtle voices and piano line, 'Desert Flight' explodes straight throughout the speakers with the first real distorted start to a song on the record. With the contrast between guitar and melody, the ever fluctuating levels in the song shows what the band are truly capable of moving away from their comfort of melodic melodies. Overall, the album is really worth buying and listening to full blast. I would definitely recommend trying to experience this live, but the full blast in a crowded room may have to do. I'll be doing that for a while.
