Album Review

After 14 years, IRRLICHT came back with a CD which can be described as a “best of” and at the same time as an introduction to their work. The band delves mainly into a melodic and soft Gothic Rock which makes it appealing especially at moments where a contemplative mode is needed. The opening ‘Pourqoui’ is one of IRRLICHT’s most known songs, though it is more upbeat with Electro elements, while ‘Fern Jeder Zeit’ is surely one of their most atmospheric songs. The band seems to switch between French and German rather successfully, according to their mood and the demands of the songs obviously. ‘Nacht über Andoya’ fails as Dietz’s vocals at low scales and tempo have not the quality one would demand. On their more Darkwave aspects, like in ‘Leuchtturm’, the band manages to write dark and interesting songs that are much inspired from the 90’s aspects of Dark and Goth music. Overall it is an interesting CD, despite its awkward moments. The feeling though is that the band should deal with them as they tend to spoil the otherwise great feeling of their songs.
