Album Review

Italy’s HOUR OF PENANCE fail to disappoint as they steamroll out with their next slab of well crafted Death Metal that is blasphemous yet richly orchestrated. ‘Sedition’ is a bit shorter than the previous ‘Paradogma’ particularly for the brief introductory track that doesn’t really do much save help anticipation, but the music here explodes with no remorse. Brutal, yet catchy, it has the trappings of VITAL REMANS meets HATE ETERNAL with the deep growls and chugging guitars meeting the smattering of drums on ‘Enlightened Submission’. One thing HOUR OF PENANCE does very well is layer the guitars melodically so it doesn’t just feel like heavy Deathcore chugs over and over or notes played at top speeds and actually sounds like the musicians put some work into the music. Other standout tracks include the rhythmic ‘Ascension’ that is much slower than a track like ‘Fall Of The Servants’, but the catchy tone of the riffs and the backing chants behind the growls during the chorus give the song the power it needs to be quite the Death Metal anthem. ‘Sedition Through Scorn’ has a bit more of a buzz to it with the guitars which adds a bit of a technical side to it with the speed the music is performed it, which is mostly just rapid chugs, but the clear production doesn’t let anything be overlapped or drowned out.

Overall the album does scream “heavy”, which some fans might find a bit of letdown when ‘Paradogma’ was slightly more melodic and intriguing, but when considering that “Blind Obedience” is the staple sound for how brutal HOUR OF PENANCE can get without sacrificing anything to get their point across in a tasteful manner, one can only imagine how much these guys must tear apart in concert. While their music is not the most epic, and rather altogether feels like it blows by pretty quick by average Death Metal standards, ‘Sedition’ doesn’t sound like it was pushed halfway or rehashed from previous works. True this album will be closer to ‘The Vile Conception’ which shocked fans for its raw, vulgar power, but ‘Sedition’ doesn’t shock as much as the entire anti-religious themes were done on ‘Paradogma’ already. On the music side though, this will fit right at home with HOUR OF PENANCE’S earlier sound. Fans who have followed them this far ever since their debut in 2003 will be more than pleased with ‘Sedition,’ and for its crisp, clean sound that innovative melodies while still retaining a very solid sound that makes Death Metal what it is, it very well may contend for album of the year in 2012.
