Album Review

FIREWIND hails from Greece and has been founded in 1998 by Gus G. (who also currently serves as a guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE) their catalogue lists seven albums with the latest ‘Few Against Many’ out in May. Is it their lucky one? We shall see. The album rolls out with ‘Wall of Sound’, good but it carries a feeling that rather than an introduction to the band it’s an introduction to the genre. The songs overall seem to be show-casting a lot of skills - for which the ‘Undying Fire’ can be taken as an example, but you’ll find gems of the said musicianship throughout. The ballad ‘Edge of a Dream’ features APOCALYPTICA as guests and it’s quite a beautiful and outstanding track here for sure, the virtuosity of the guests juxtaposed with Gus G’s virtuosity on his guitar.

The album gives a feeling of leaning towards the classical side of Heavy/Power Metal though retaining a steady sense that it comes from y. 2012. The vocal sometimes gives it a bit of a tired feel, but is good nevertheless; just don’t expect excellence to match the guitar work. Enjoyable, however, not very memorable - the songs lack some of the lustre - especially if you consider the lyrics - it may have demanded more of it, more of energy to lend it conviction and passion for sure. The songs often have certain catchiness but it never reaches zenith quite well. So not very lucky though not a throw-away effort either.
