Album Review

IWRESTLEDABEARONCE is a band from the United States, founded back in 2007. Their music is hard to pinpoint, since they combine various elements into their very own music. In 2013, their third studio record ‘Late For Nothing’ is released, following ‘Ruining It For Everybody’ and ‘It’s All Happening’. It is also the first album with vocalists Courtney replacing Krysta Cameron.

The opener and pre-release ‘Thunder Chunky’ starts off with a calmer part and continues with a mixture of breakdowns, atonal rhythms, harsh as well as clean sung vocals. Already this song makes clear, that IWRESTLEDABEARONCE are everything but predictable – elements from Deathcore, Metal, Jazz and electronic music are combined to a unique product and no song is like another. Catchy hook-lines and melodies are to be found quite frequently, for instance in ‘Letters To Stallone’. ‘Snake Charmer’ has a more complex song structure and an almost epic-sounding middle part, whereas ‘Boat Paddle’ is faster and dominated mostly by harsh, growled and screamed vocals. ‘Firebees’ is even more chaotic and at first listen not too easy to grasp. In contrast, ‘Mind The Gap’ is a calmer song with very emotional and powerful lyrics.

‘Carnage Asada’ includes a guitar solo by Steve Vai and some Tango-like elements. ‘The Map’ is again a little slower, ‘That’s A Horse Of A Different Color’ includes electronic elements and varies between different tempos. ‘Id’ Buy That For A Dollar’ is a harsher, Deathcore-like song, although it’s generally difficult to categorize IWRESTLEDABEARONCE. Yet, the pop-influenced and melodic vocals are as well a trademark as the unusual song structures. ‘It Don’t Make Me No Nevermind’ concludes the album and leaves the listener probably a bit confused after the first listening of “Nothing To Lose”. It surely needs a couple of spins to make sense of the album, yet it is very innovative and interesting and definitely worth being checked out by open-minded fans of modern Metal.
