Album Review

'Tales Of Us' is album number six from the British duo GOLDFRAPP and marks a return to the cinematic wall of sound of the debut album 'Felt Mountain', released in 2000, and a departure from the Dance and Pop of albums like 'Black Cherry' (2003) or 'Head First', the predecessor of 'Tales Of Us' which was released in 2010. It is perfect timing that GOLDFRAPP release their new album at the beginning of autumn, as 'Tales Of Us' is perfect for the colder seasons of the year. Ethereal, down-tempo and organic, the music on 'Tales Of Us' evokes pictures of treetops coloured in and ruby-red and gold, smoky hills, swaying branches and chilling air. Perhaps 'Tales Of Us' will bring up different associations for different people but no-one can deny that GOLDFRAPP's music is very filmic and evocative.

Singer Alison Goldfrapp aspirates and whispers on ten sparse tracks, most of them titled with forenames, most often accompanied by a gently plucked acoustic guitar and many times by subtle strings, with a few synth sounds here and occasional piano fragments. 'Tales Of Us' has a very folky feeling to it and stays in ballad territory, with the song 'Thea' being the only one that reaches out to a less downbeat tempo with its charily pulsating beats. There are not really any songs that stand out on this album, which sounds worse than it is because 'Tales Of Us' is basically an album you should enjoy in one go and appreciate as a unit. GOLDFRAPP rewards the listener with 45 minutes of haunting but beautiful music. Dreamy and melancholic, enchanting and mesmerizing, GOLDFRAPP is the siren you will compliantly give in to. If you are looking for the perfect album for autumn, get this one!
