Album Review

FORGOTTEN SOULS is a Polish Extreme Metal band, founded in 1998. So far, they have released four studio records, the latest one being entitled ‘Sirius 12’. They combine elements of Black Metal and Avant-garde into an interesting and unique mixture. The intro of the album includes electronic and experimental melodies as well as atonal harmonies, which build up a tension that concludes in the beginning of ‘The Flight’ – a powerful and fast, industrial-influenced track with harsh vocals and interesting dynamics. ‘Nowhere Here’ makes use of more tempo changes and also vocals that vary between screamed and clean-sung. The following ‘Signals’ is somewhat slower and builds up a very dark and gloomy atmosphere. Some oriental harmonies introduce ‘Can’t Resist’, which is a bizarre and hypnotic but definitely impellent track. In general, the music of FORGOTTEN SOULS is dark and mysterious, hard to pin down to a certain genre – they make frequent use of extreme metal riffs, although industrial, electronic elements are incorporated as well as avant-garde harmonies and song structures.

For instance, ‘The Bkack Tzwar’ comes off in an epic, yet very straight-forward orientated manner, whereas ‘Na Horyzoncié’ is more experimental and not too easy to indulge. The title track ‘Sirius 12’ includes a lot of variation and has an underlying, driving groove. ‘The Sum Of All Suns’ also uses an down-tempo interlude and is overall a more aggressive and emotional track. In contrast, ‘Nobody’ is very harsh, monotonous and has almost incomprehensible lyrics. ‘Willow Green’ is less brutal and uses unusual instruments and effects. ‘Hope’ marks an interesting conclusion of the album, which includes the most important elements of FORGOTTEN SOULS into an energetic and unique mixture. ‘Sirius 12’ is an interesting and thoroughly thought of album that makes use of unusual elements and combines them into a bizarre hybrid. Definitely recommended for open-minded metal and industrial fans.
