Album Review

Berlin based, and who isn't these days, FELIDAE TRICK are certainly multi-cultural, boasting links to Israel, Germany, Egypt, Turkey and Hungary. Which is just showing off really. And musically, there are international influences and nuances bounding about here like a rampant Google Earth map.

'Left My Home' confidently employs urgent guitars as if THE JAM were enjoying a face-off with THE KNACK. It's as new-wave as it's possible to get, but refreshingly now somehow. Short and sweet, it'll happily take up residence in your head and stay there until it’s bored of you. Can't argue with that. Other-wordly synths flutter about on the bouncy, optimistic 'Romantically High', and it's another compact little gem of a song. 'Spread Feathers' slows the pace and ramps up the guitars, and it's gorgeous, strangely conjuring up ghosts of RADIOHEAD from the 'OK Computer' era, shimmering and pulsing to an abrupt ending. And clocking in under three minutes means there's not an ounce of fat here, it's trimmed and honed perfectly. Impressive stuff. There's almost endless variety. The softly sung 'Lots Of Songs' wanders dreamily into prog-rock territory, and the dancey stomp of 'Back Into Nothing' has hand-claps propelling it's infectious chorus.

“The desert wind, and the sun above” is nicely evoked on 'Sheikh Jarrah', although it's not the strongest melody on offer. But once it screeches into a furious gallop half way through, it just manages to succeed on inventiveness alone. 'French Movies' is similarly 'difficult' at times, but the bizarre  'Loving Nowadays' charms everything back into place. It sounds like three or four songs in one, and maybe it is. It's so busy doing everything at once that you just have to smile. Which leaves 'Life Before Death' to usher us out. Some furious percussion and hand-claps cement this together, and it's a brilliantly bold and powerful few minutes. Again, there's nothing excessive or indulgent here.

FELIDAE TRICK state their influences are as diverse as NIRVANA, ARCTIC MONKEYS and THE CURE. But what's more important is the plundering of various styles, sounds and textures to create something unique and refreshingly global, a coming together of era's, genres and countries with no hint of pretentiousness. And that's got to be a good thing, right?
