Album Review
FINNTROLL are a Finnish Folk Metal band, which also include influences from Black Metal and Pagan Metal. They have been around since 1997 and have thus far released six studio albums, the latest one being entitled ‘Blodsvept’ (2013). With ‘Natten Med de Levande Finntroll’, the band releases its first live album, which was recorded 2008 in Amsterdam. Consequently, the album does not feature the most recent offerings of FINNTROLL. ‘Natten Med de Levande Finntroll’ offers a tracklist with 19 titles and consequently the concert in its entirety. Those provide a nice insight into the band’s live abilities, and it appears that the audience on this particular evening was very enthusiastic – shouts and chants can be heard as well as the band encouraging the visitors.
Moreover, the recording sounds very authentic and presumably, not too much was changed in the post-production. Consequently, the album succeeds fairly in conveying the live atmosphere and, at least to a particular extent, the energy of this evening. Nevertheless, a live album is most of the time a rather difficult matter, since due to the lack of the visual sphere, an important aspect of a performance and the live presence is not included. ‘Natten Med de Levande Finntroll’ proves to be quite entertaining and can also offer a starting point to check the band out. However, the album appears more likely to be recommendable to die-hard fans of the band, but not as a must-buy.
