I think sooner or later everyone finds something special for themselves, different from what they heard before or at least something that comes in the right time. For me such discovery recently has become the debut EP ‘Vom Verlassen und Ankommen’ of talented German musician HENRIK BOEHL. Actually there are only five acoustic tracks without any superfluous effects, which just attract with their simplicity and sincerity. Of course, it’s better to listen to the songs when you are in a lyrical mood however as the record proceeds, you fall more and more under its spell, created only by the instruments and vocals. The main part belongs to the guitar and lyrics, and after all the NDH and German hard rock and metal it’s unusual to hear the language in such a “fluffy” arrangement, but quite nice and moreover you don’t need to understand every single word to feel the atmosphere of the songs. The piano and definitely the voice support and supplement the harmony and tranquillity, intensifying their impact on listeners. The music pieces themselves are not mere songs, as they look more like poems, the recitation of which is accompanied by music and this is where all the beauty hides.
The EP sounds a bit nostalgic and sometimes reminds of the times of ‘Cannonball’ by DAMIAN RICE. It may be compared to other artists of the kind, but still there is not so much in common and ‘Vom Verlassen und Ankommen’ is unique in its own way. My personal favourites are the opening piece ‘Wo die großen Wellen sind’ as it seems to be the most soulful one of the EP and the title track with its almost imperceptible touch of light melancholy. However all the compositions are worth listening to and they will please everyone who likes good music of any genre. Thus the debut work turned out to be good enough and impressive and it will be interesting to see what will come next.
