Album Review

Some news from France with FORETASTE’s 4th album! Despite France would not be the obvious country you’ll think of when talking about synth pop, it’s interesting to observe that there are many very talented and interesting acts over there: FORETASTE, CELLULOIDE or DEKAD are the Boredom Productions reps, Foundry Records signed the veterans WAITING FOR WORDS as well as SHINY DARKNESS, PEOPLE THEATRE and PULSE and many indie acts offers also some brilliant productions and style.

But for today, FORETASTE is under the spotlight. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I was a huge fan of FORETASTE’s first two albums, but somehow, with the 2011’s ‘Love On Demand’ and the re-mastering / re-recording stuffs they did for years, they lost me along the road. I didn’t really know what to expect when starting the listening of ‘Space Echoes’ to be honest. And it didn’t started very well to me. The opening track ‘Lost In Space’ sounds like DE/VISION sounding like DEPECHE MODE, and the five following tracks are just some more FORETASTE sounding like CELLULOIDE (with better vocal skills, let’s be honest) and I was about to drop it when the surprise came up. ‘Every Shadow’, the 7th track with its Carl Craig alike orchestral arrangements starts a totally different album from that point: rich arrangements, dark atmosphere, deep lyrics and vocals. As per the sound and production, they go for deeper and warmer sounds, big basses and some dark electro variations (the 2nd part of ‘Spacewalker’). Creature XX gives one of her best vocal performances on ‘Paradise Of Broken Hearts’ and ‘Higher’ as the album ends up on the instrumental and atmospheric ‘Alpha’, reminding a bit of early JEAN MICHEL JARRE stuff.

You have to know there’s also an EP available, ‘Lost In Space’, the first promo single. You can find two non-album tracks that should really have been part of it instead of some of the six first tracks of it, just me saying: in a pure early FORETASTE style, ‘My Absolution’ and another orchestral track, the beautiful and emotional ‘Diving In Hell’, and yet another Creature XX’ splendid performance. I can only score the album a six on the overall as less than half of it really got me. Should it have been an EP that it would have get a 10. Having said that, with this album, FORETASTE finally breaks the Synth Pop clichés they were chained to and open doors to new adventures with style. They may lose some pure die-hard Synth Pop fans in the process, but they can clearly seduce some new ones, more open minded to larger influences and appealed by artists who take risks and reinvent themselves.
