Album Review

After the release of their album ‘Wrack & Ruin’ the beast HOCICO was laid to sleep and each of the members concentrated on their own projects. Erk released his first album under the alias RABIA SORDA but we heard nothing from DULCE LIQUIDO so far. Anyway, the waiting is over and the new HOCICO album ‘Memorias Atrás’ has been released a few days ago.

This time there’s no intro guiding you to the first ‘real track’ and the album starts right away with ‘A fatal desire’  that makes it clear as plain as can be, that the guys still now how to create a straight club filler. The next track ‘The Shape of things to come’ should already be familiar to many people as it was sold on the Out of Line Tour last year, where HOCICO where headliners. It’s a bit slower but with a heavy bass and it’s very melodically of course. ’Stop my Madness’ is a real exception on the album. If you recall ‘Last Warning’ which was included on the single, you’ll get an idea of the sound. The track picks up the idea and spins it further. The first part comes out without any drumming but with a good portion of atmosphere and lots of effects, so the whispering vocals are sometimes barely understandable and for a short length of time a unusual slow and layered beat appear before the track concludes with another very atmospheric part. Don’t have to say much about ‘About a Dead’: Faster, harder and intended and intended to fill the dance floors in no time.

The next one follows the same agenda in terms of club compatibility, then it’s time for a short instrumental giving you time to rest until ‘Spirals of Time’ appears on the scene and though I would consider it as danceable (What else) it has a much more detailed and more complex drum programming. ‘Doomed to Perish’ is - regardless of its rather slow tempo - very driving and ‘Blindfold’ goes into the same direction but works with a straighter dance beat. I really love ‘Taste the Waste’ for its melodies others might like it because of its tempo and beat. ‘Drowning’ is the last regular track and comes up with intricate drum programming with a variety of sounds. Melodies are used much more subtle and the distortion effects are - at least in the chorus - not so heavy as usual. They haven’t re-invented themselves or created something entirely new. Nevertheless ‘Memorias Atrás’ is a step forward for HOCICO and incorporates some new elements into the sound and the courage to put a song like ‘Stop my Madness’ onto the album which differs quite a lot from the usual stuff.
