Album Review

The band was formed in Moscow in 2005. Initially working as a duo, other members gradually grew into the line-up as of October 2007 and the current material was completed in this year’s March.

With the six tracks of this release, the Russian formation presents a very atmospheric mixture of Post Punk and subtle electronic elements, very subtle in fact. That this band was actually influenced by Neue Deutsche Welle and EBM bands is barely audible anymore. Since their foundation in 2005, the band has developed their own sound out of these elements. All of the six songs on this release are compact gems of the Post Punk genre. One characteristic of the band’s sound is the strong emphasis which was placed on the bass, so for the most time it takes on a much more dominant part than the mostly fragile guitar work. Another thing is very special about this band. All the lyrics are in Russian, except for the track ‘Free’ which is included two times; one is actually an English version. Sviatoslav’s chant is very much processed with reverberation and is very low in the mix, so it seems that it’s a mere echo, coming from far away, which is gives it  kind of a ghostly feeling. A surprise comes with the track ‘Diaries’ which is going straight forward with rocking riffs and fast drumming and provides a welcomed diversion. The whole character of the sound appears quite unpolished and honest. On some track, you can even hear them counting to the inset.

The Russian quintet made a good first impression on me, the songs are compact and with no length. The only thing I would want to hear would be some more balanced mixture between English and Russian tracks. Hopefully there’ll be an album in the near future.
