Album Review

This is what the fans of FIXMER/MCCARTHY have been waiting for. After the overwhelming success of ‘Between The Devil’ and its accompanying singles, Terence Fixmer and Douglas McCarthy, each one a big name in their respective genres and presumably beyond have finished and released the successor ‘Into the Night’ which might be a shock for those who’ve embosomed the NITZER EBB inspired sound of the debut.

‘Into The Night’ starts with the same-titled intro, a playful piece of electronic music raising the curiosity for the upcoming and what is it that welcomes the listener on ‘Like Voodoo’, a shuffling electro rhythm, preceded by miss-tuned sequences which literally lead you by your nose. The hypnotic oscillating melody which is harbouring unwillingly puts you back into the 80s, just love that song. So the opener woke the lust for more, but you should take a seat before you start with ‘Banging down the Door’. Douglas McCarthy sings sort of, well it’s not that bad, actually I’m surprised that he’s even capable of singing. That track is brilliantly produced Electronic Pop and a perfect prove that the duo gives a damn shit about any genre borders. Instead of monotonous sequencer lines sweet melodies emerge with the sad sound of a violin as highlight I still tend to say that it’s a real one. ‘Love the Night’ also bears the melancholy in its very core and I still can’t say how surprised I am about this sudden penchant for melodies. However, the next track ‘Look To Me’ brings back the old EBM-ish sounds and McCarthy is back in his element, he shouts and screams as if there’s no tomorrow and with a bit of fantasy one can imagine the bursting into ecstasy when their master shouts that track live. It seems like McCarthy has a real fancy for singing as the next track ‘And Then Finally’ again is a paragon of melody, the float, they spread and most importantly touch and if you want you can dance to it as well. ‘Blood and Music’ is seething, it’s like an explosion that is about to happen, it builds up an incredible tension, sparse beats and threatening sequencer lines increase the adrenaline level while Douglas screams out “Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance” and that is the point where you can’t hold back anymore.

The ‘Pistol Whipper’ is, in a classic sense’ a number leaned on the early Electronic Body Music. Minimalist arranged, straight forward and with the fitting vocals. Short, catchy fragments. In ‘A Great and Distant Silence’ it bleeps and drones from every corner. That track is a prefect reminisce to analogue sound synthesis like it was a few decades ago. And now everyone hold your breath because this is the biggest surprise of all. ‘Tonight I Sleep’ is nothing short than a real ballad with Douglas singing I the most emotive way you can imagine, only supported by gentle piano dabs and wide synth layers. Brilliant stuff. On ‘Hate me’ we get to hear a combination of melodic chant and aggressive shouts to the driving sound of a club beat. ‘Trans European’ is in my opinion the weakest track, it just goes in one ear and out the other, obviously being influenced by 90s Euro dance; no revelation but ‘Make War’ is one; that I can assure you of. First I had to check if this really is the same CD; a rock smasher par excellence and another nod into a different genre. As bonus you get ‘Tonight I Sleep’ as it was initially planned, meaning the melodies have almost completely disappeared; in stead a solemn rhythm took their place. I for one like the other version a lot more.

Other than many people might have expected ‘Into the Night’ is not a continuation to the critically-acclaimed debut ‘Between the Devil’. The two have opened their minds to new influences and are not ashamed anymore to even use melodies. For me it was an absolute surprise as I expected just what everyone expected. ‘Into the Night’ is a wonderful evolution and a brilliant piece of electronic music.
