Album Review

The American trio FEEDING FINGERS was founded in 2006 by multimedia artist, musician, and animator, Justin Curfman with support from multi-instrumentalist, Todd Caras, and percussionist, Danny Hunt. Their first well-received album ‘Wound in Wall’ was released in 2007. At first it was meant to be only a vacation from Justin’s film work but later it was settled to continue FEEDING FINGERS beyond this first release and as a result of this decision we’re now having the second instalment ‘Baby Teeth’ in our hands.

Once you’ve inserted ‘Baby Teeth’ in your player you can say goodbye to the normal world for a little while. The feeling I had when listening through this record was that the music of FEEDING FINGERS in some way is disconnected from reality. It evokes own, at times surreal environments and on some songs I couldn’t shake of the feeling of them being a good musical accentuation for a movie. Now back to the music. As you’ll find out the drumming is pretty minimalist and reminiscent of 70s, maybe early 80s post punk movement. JOY DIVISION if you need a comparison and the vocals in parts come pretty close to Robert Smith’s lamenting and suffering but have a very own, signature sound to them. Now I’m finally going to start elaborating on a couple tracks commencing with the opener ‘Neverlight’ fading in with low-key guitars before drums, classic bass, and a beautiful little piano melody continue to carry the song onwards  and at some point Justin’s voice clocks in like a distant echo. Speedy drums, menacing bass tones alongside disquieting synth work and organ keys make ‘Permission to Sleep’ a pretty eerie piece! It always feels like a hounding through a forest at night.

‘This isn’t enough’ builds from a weird melange of warped samples and as it evolves gets a touch of frigid ambience turning to longing/resignation hybrid as a goose bump piano melody rises out of the darkness “If this isn’t enough / Why am I here?” The vividness and creativeness of the drums on display in ‘No Movement in Water’ is simply stunning and is an exception in arrangement on the album. Once you’ve ended your journey through ‘Baby Teeth’ you come to realize how far gone you really were while listening to it. It really is music that puts a spell on you so if you haven’t heard of FEEDING FINGERS till now (like me before this CD), read this to the end and got curious you should definitely get some samples at their MySpace. You won’t regret it!
