Album Review

The band INCITE was founded in 2004 by Richie Cavalera [stepson of the well-known Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy)]. Their self-released EP ‘Divided We Fail’ was sold over 4,500 times and already attracted attention. After having toured in the United States and Europe as support for bands such as Cavalera Conspiracy, Soulfly and The Dillinger Escape Plan, the ascending band is about to release its first full length album ‘The Slaughter’, which was produced by Logan Mader, who already worked with Devildriver and Divine Hersey. Due to this extensive being on the road, the band has been able to obtain some supporters.

With regard to Richie’s familiar and musical background (growing up in the Cavalera-Family, being on tour and certainly influenced by Max), it will be interesting to see how this band will develop and if they will be able to create a uniqueness, so that they won’t require the name Cavalera as figurehead. After a short intro, ‘The Slaughter’ kicks off with the correspondent song and a beginning that somehow reminds me of Lamb of God. The refrain verse “I am here to kill you” is surely suitable to scream along during a concert. ‘Nothing to fear’ continues with unaltered speed whilst ‘Army of Darkness’ starts with a little guitar gimmick, this and the guitar solo in ‘Awakening’ show the musicians qualities.  In general, INCITE’s music is very straight-forward and remains without any embellishment.

‘Time For a change’ peers into the hardcore-direction and differs from its forerunners, who stick underline a grooving atmosphere. The other songs veer towards a similar direction, an energetic mixture between Thrash Metal and Hardcore. During the whole album, Richie uses his voice in a screaming, stable manner, where people might have expected some variety. ‘The Slaughter’ is a good piece of work of an up-and-coming, young band. Fans of bands such as Lamb of God, Devildriver or Cavalera Conspiracy will not be disappointed for checking the album out. INCITE are definitely on the way of becoming a well-respected band.
