Album Review

On 6th of November 2009, Danse Macabre presents the debut of GRIMM. The Formation was founded in 2005 and is located to Hamburg / Germany. Their first Album ‘Kalt wie Dein Herz’ could not be arranged to a certain genre. The borders between Gothic Rock, Industrial, Dark Wave are crossed. And if you look at the Line-up you see that they also used a cello and a violin, which are arranged to classical music. In this case, it’s really interesting to listen to. If you just read the title you could assume this album to be very depressive, emotional, thinkable, and memorable. And that’s almost right. Carina De Jesus supports Jan Sörensen and gives the album a touch of soul. The vocals and the dark mood are underlined with typical electronic sounds, creating a fresh mixture.

The first track ‘Konsumier mich’ already introduces the listener with rhythmical, industrial sounds, pushing you forward to dance. I would love to say it’s an order to dance! The voice of Carina De Jesus is dominating the chorus and that’s a quite good relief to the mostly powerful track you would love to listen it as loud as your speakers can. This song was released shortly after the foundation of GRIMM by a free download and was suddenly successful. Therefore it had been placed in different listener charts. So, many of you probably know this track already. From my point of view the best song on this album! The 2nd track is much more aggressive and could be compared to the music of TAMTRUM e.g. whereas the 3rd is more slowly and monotone. You see yet there’s change within the album. But in general the guitars are very present and often dominant, especially to the following song ‘Tanzen’.

The next (pretty good) song is called ‘Schön’ and deals with the demand of a woman in a sexual way. It’s nevertheless a sensitive song in a certain way. The next song, called ‘Prophet’ got rhetorical questions you have to think about and satisfies the title. Orchestral instruments dominating this song and makes this to one of the special one on this album. It could certainly be played in the radio because it has got the potential to be a catchy tune! The following songs are not as dominated by the guitars as the others. For instance you would prefer them for relaxing. There is ‘Energie’ where you may find certain similarities to the music of ENIGMA except from the male voice. I also have to keep in mind the song ‘Tiefer’. The metaphor is used in a melancholic way which creates a feeling of sadness. This song got a ‘deep’ message which is underlined with the rough voice of Jan Sörensen. On this song it fits totally.

My conclusion to this album: I would be recommended by people who love the change of powerful industrial songs and sensitive Rock (ballads). All together a successful album!
