Album Review

The five-piece founded in Tilburg in 2001. They got to know each other during training at the “Fortys Rockakademie” and quickly started writing their first songs. The debut single ‘Happy?’ released in 2003, immediately hit #3 of the Dutch charts. Also their self-titled debut album became much of a success. It set the foundation for a successful career spawning 3 highly acclaimed albums. ‘Kingdom of Contradiction’ now is supposed to be another step forward for the band.

The first track ‘Cookie Jar’ already is an engaging effort beginning with heavy distorted guitars leading over to complex drum figures and multi-layered guitar work crowned by Roger Peterson’s raucous vocals. ‘Cut me Loose’ strikes calmer tones but also brings in foreign influences from the Far East. ‘Perfect’, the first single, couldn’t be differing more from the previous tracks with its Metal-like sound clothing. The guitars are much heavier and more demanding and occasional double-bass attacks hammer holes inside the ground you’re standing on. ‘Solo’ centres sort of a Drum’n’Bass influence on the drums, which I’d never expected on such an album. The percussive rhythms of ‘No Ones’ add another stylistic variation to the sound of INTWINE before the song segues into a straight rock storm.

With ‘Walking on the Moon’, a cover version of a POLICE classic made it onto the album beginning with a comparatively sparse arrangement condensing in intensity while progressing and with the additional vocal support of Sarah Bettens of ‘K’S CHOICE making it an emotionally-charged rock duet. When I put the album in my player I didn’t think I’d get to hear such a stunning amount of diversity. The common rock orchestration is expanded many times over with influences coming from all sorts of genres. Thus, ‘Kingdom of Contradiction’ is an album fans of forward-thinking rock music should have in their shelves.
