Single Review

Though the American three-piece GOSSIP has already been in the music business for about one decade, the year 2009 can be regarded as the most commercially successful one for Beth, Hannah and Nathan who signed their first major label deal by delivering the most recent album `Music For Men´ in this year’s summer. After they had released the mega-seller `Heavy Cross´, which reached #2 of the German charts, the album’s second single entitled with `Love Long Distance´ is in the starting blocks.

Firstly, I should mention that I really liked `Heavy Cross´ due to its powerful refrain and Beth’s melancholic and at the same time energetic vocals. Therefore, I was looking forward to listen to the new track. `Love Long Distance´ begins with restrained piano sounds and dynamic drum beats that are soon joined by Beth Ditto’s unmistakably emotive singing which reaches its climax by arriving at a danceable, club-ready and passionate refrain. Sounds good so far, doesn’t it? However, with regard to structure and melody, the new piece is kind of similar to `Heavy Cross´ which shouldn’t mean that the tracks are totally alike. GOSSIP seems to be determined to enter the charts again and obviously pursues the goal to appeal to a rather mainstream audience, as `Love Long Distance´ appears way too polished to me. Therefore, you will get four minutes full of picture-perfect pop music that displays a lack of the raw energy GOSSIP became famous for.
