Italian project HIDDEN PLACE was given birth to in 2004. A first demo CD called 'Weather Station' got released in 2005 and a couple tracks of it would be appearing on German compilations. It would take another 2 years before the debut album 'Fantasia Meccanica' got released in 2007, and two more until their newest silver disc 'Punto Luce' appears in the spotlights.
Opener 'Teknicolor' dwells in a plaintive world full of 80s sounds and only occasionally robotic vocals will appear out of the grey. 'Alexander Strasse' follows suit, only with the difference of SaraLux delivering ethereal chants to the track. The title piece adds danceability to the portfolio of stylistic ranges but remains true to the 80s vibe of its predecessors. The drum lines rolling away under the stretched bits of ambience on 'United (Punto Mix)' develop a recognizable strength while otherwise the track remains pretty plain to me. 'London to Rome' starts with the retro rhythm section only which is kept much more minimalist than the others on the disc to give the melodies ample space to unfold.
At first 'Synthetic Light' just utilizes little synth lines and bleeps, fooling you into thinking there would be following something upbeat to surprise with a spherical down-tempo construction. The determining element in the music of HIDDEN PLACE is the atmosphere. Nothing to complain about that but many times they seem to ignore that rhythms can be more than mere supporting elements. They could use some more diversity now and then. Apart from that it's a nice little album.
