Album Review
This multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band was formed in 1999 and is notable for its theatrical stage shows. The intention behind GOGOL BORDELLO is to “smuggle” Gypsy / European music into the English speaking world and slowly take control of the government (Just kidding). Back to the band, which has made its first ever live appearance in an after-hours club called Pizdetz and eventually became the residents. In 1999, they released their first album ‘Voi-La Intruder’ by Rubicon Records, followed by four more albums of which ‘Trans-Continental Hustle’ has been recently released as the newest one on 21st May.
The album is opened by ‘Pala Tute’ with a propulsive, rhythmical guitar line that eventually leads into a folkloristic dancing anthem. ‘My Companjera’ goes even faster with speed and emphasizes the gypsy character stronger than before. ‘Sun Is on My Side’, however, plays it rather slow, putting a rough end to the dancing pleasure that had begun with the first two offerings by developing melancholic traits. It’s like a narrative, told at a bonfire at night in some way. But don’t you worry, the calm doesn’t last for long and with ‘Rebellious Love’ already the next vibrant, shaking track is coming up that is mostly living on its fiery, South-American rhythms. ‘Immigraniada (We Comin' Rougher)’ begins with an easy rhythm sub growth for a grooving bass line as a prelude to one erratic tune, dividing into calm and ecstatic moment. The album continues to switch between upbeat movements and slow, in a way meditative moments while the former ones clearly have the upper hand. One of those is also to end the album with the title track, adding a harder note to its build with the rocking guitars.
There's no lack of musicianship at all with GOGOL BORDELLO and live, as witnessed by me already, they have a latent fun factor for large groups of people, but after all it’s a type of music that isn’t up my alley. It’ll definitely please everyone having found pleasure in the earlier works of the bands. Others might want to check out some teasers first if they consider giving it another try.
