Album Review

INSIDIOUS DISEASE was formed in late 2004 by Silenoz (Dimmu Borgir) and Jardar (Old Man’s Child) with drummer Tony Laureano (Angelcorpse, Nile). Later Shane Embury (Napalm Death, Brujeria, Lock Up) was included as a bass player. As a singer, the band chose Marc Grewe (former Morgoth), since his voice differs from the usual growling and adds a unique aspect to the music. They also played the famous Wacken Open Air in 2009 as an unsigned band and gained lots of attention.

‘Shadowcast’ is opened up with the sick and fast ‘Nuclear Salvation’, which already makes clear that the band is not about to make any compromises either in sound or in speed. Fast drumming and sophisticated guitar work underline the easy to understand yet brutal vocals. ‘Boundless’ starts off at a more moderate speed, also providing some melodic elements but still being heavy and not sounding catchy. Especially the guitars in this song point out the musician’s qualities. In general, INSIDIOUS DISEASE commands a rather modern attitude towards death metal, which is audible through the high-produced and very clear sound. The following ‘The Essence of Neglect’ gains up some more speed and also shows the diverse possibilities, in which singer Marc can use his voice (since also some lower or whispered parts are included). Furthermore, the lyrical content deals with rage, anger, hate and gore / blood-shedding. So, it’s definitely fittingly aspects for death metal.

‘Abortion Stew’ shows some similarities to grindcore and is the fastest song until then, yet without losing the technical standard. ‘The Desire’ then veers towards thrash metal, topping the previous speed and brutality. Sounding a bit like CANNIBAL CORPSE, ‘Rituals of Bloodshed’ strains the listeners’ necks even more, so that the listener gets in the mood of attending a live concert. ‘Facemask’ continues in that manner, not serving many surprises but rather the typical and wanted combination of speed, brutality and felicitous instrumentation. After nine songs and 36 minutes of total play time, ‘Shadowcast’ ends with ‘Value in Flesh’ and ‘Abandonment’. A special edition also possesses to more bonus songs. In the end, it becomes clear, that INSIDIOUS DISEASE created a death metal record, which offers unequalled opportunities. They managed to remain true to their intention, without making any compromises. Fans of the genre should not miss this album.
