Album Review

It was in 2009 that news surfaced JESUS ON EXTASY would be working on a new record. Indeed, they did and this time the new record was entirely self-produced by the band with all due care. The third one is entitled ‘No Gods’ and was put out a few weeks ago already.

The opener ‘Revenge’ is setting up a mood permeated with ominous tones, descending from piano and synth gimmicks before starting to tell the story of a screwed up childhood that brings forth horrible results. The following title track brings up classical piano embellishments until the vibrant rock set of instruments joins in, pushing the song forward. ‘Beauty In Your Eyes’ starts that much modest, it doesn’t give away anything about what’s going to follow after the processed drums and shamanic chants gave the introduction. As it all fades out, it opens the door for a sinister rock song to enter the room, which segues into an anthemic, grave chorus line.

‘Riot’ is what it says, even though it doesn’t seem like it from the very beginning, but in the further course it’s developing quite dynamic drum rhythms and a defiant, aggressive attitude. “The bigger they come, the harder they fall” That seems to have been the inspiration for the lyrics of ‘Movie Star’. Once was a highly-regarded star, eventually ending up as addict and just another dead man! It’s almost a singer/songwriter song that ends the album with ‘Tonight’: Acoustic guitar, a few strings, and subtle electronics are for the most part our company, but the rock ingredients come back in the end which I don’t think would have been necessary here. JESUS ON EXTASY stick to their established glories on ‘No Gods’, meaning there’s no particular shift into a new direction, but a maturity in certain areas to be heard. Solid release!
