Album Review

INERTIA, one of the “veteran” London EBM bands after eighteen years in existence released ‘Kloned’ in February this year, which was a feast of covers, be it of their own older songs or songs by the likes of DEPECHE MODE, T-REX, NICK CAVE, FALCO, DURAN DURAN and ELVIS PRESLEY amongst others. This month ‘Deworlded’ is coming out, it contains their new original materials. Reza Udhin, a founding member of INERTIA, is also a keyboard player of KILLING JOKE and the others are also members of other bands, not to mention several line-up changes during the years so that they persevered with INERTIA is commendable - they’re a great band! Although one might ask if they still got the wind in their sails. The answer is - definitely - yes!

‘Deworlded’ was three years in the making and it was more than worth it. This is both a musically and thematically compact album that takes you through the night of the soul, examining your issues by compelling you to step beyond the world (“deworld” yourself so to speak) and look at how to make your life better from a different perspective. You find here the classical sound of EBM as you might have heard it when the genre emerged, as well as new approaches.

To mention some of the highlights - ‘Repeat & Follow’ - the percussion and the relentless beat! Other gems are ‘Alien’ with its wave-like cinematic beginning, turning into appropriately “alien” soundscapes and a truly memorable refrain. ‘Strange Familiar’ is a beautiful, atmospheric instrumental. ‘Round and Round’ is a more aggressive, harsh rhythmic composition with a great touch given by Alexy’s distorted voice rapping in the opening verses and her strong vocal throughout, the build-up of urgency and certain feeling of futility invoked by repetition of “round and round we go”. The last ‘Capture’ brings a fantastic closure!

I can’t fault the sequencing, the Industrial interlinings, and the fitting vocals, Alexy’s especially. The music is not “in your face” so to speak but it’s strong and effective nevertheless. It’s altogether an excellent album that should be in any EBM/Industrial fan’s collection.
