Album Review

HELSTAR were formed in 1982 in Houston, Texas and are combining elements of Power, Thrash and Speed Metal throughout their discography. Their debut, ‘Burning Star’, was released in 1982 Now, in 2010, the eight studio record has just been released, ‘Glory of Chaos’. Singer James is the only constant member. As I listened to some of their early works, it soon became pretty clear that HELSTAR mostly produced Power Metal. So I was very surprised when I heard the title track, ‘Angels Fall To Hell’, which opens up with a harmonic beginning, soon veering towards pretty fast forward Thrash Metal.

It is only when the vocals set in that you realize it’s actually HELSTAR you’re listening to. This symbiosis of falsetto vocals and harsh riffs is obviously a matter of taste. The second song, ‘Pandemonium’ starts off very fast and possesses a very catchy, borderline cheesy chorus, at times sounding a bit similar to NEVERMORE. Yet, the band is developing towards a simpler and less-progressive style, but some songs sound very alike and HELSTAR are in danger of losing their uniqueness. Songs like ‘Dethtrap’ or ‘Alma Negra’ are thrash hits and in general, the album includes some nice tunes but all in all nothing get’s totally stuck in one’s ear to make the album remarkable.
