Album Review

JUROJIN, a band from England, was formed in 2008. They’ve performed in both acoustic sets and in Metal Hammer Festival in Katowice, and collaborated with Anna Phoebe, JETHRO TULL violinist, known also from TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA. Short tour in USA is also a credit to their name.

The songs in the first part especially owe a lot to the legendary TOOL; ‘The Scars’ and ‘Liar’ made me feel that there was too much of it, in my opinion Australian KARNIVOOL had assimilated their TOOL influence in a much more original way than JUROJIN, but luckily as the album moves on there is more of what’s generally termed as ‘world’ music influences included, their (classically trained) Indian Tabla player gives it especially a truly wonderful flavour. There’s a lot of interest in the esoteric and mystical (maybe another reason of their affinity with TOOL), after all the band title itself is symbolic, taken from Japanese Taoism to represent one of the seven Gods of Fortune, the one that stands for longevity.

‘The Living Measure Of Time’ is a relaxing, meditative music, interesting, even beautiful and with much promise evident for the future. Now I am a big fan of TOOL but I do hope that they’ll swerve a bit more into the territory which won’t remind the listener of the prog-metal titans too much. The longevity that they crave for then will be guaranteed. However, I’ve enjoyed the album either way and will be interesting in what else they’ll bring out.
