Fall Out Boy, Dúné

‘This ain’t a scene, it’s an arms race’ - the single that made FALL OUT BOY famous in Germany. Releasing their first album ‘Fall Out Boy's Evening out with your Girlfriend’ in 2003, they soon became one of the best known alternative rock bands in the USA. This year, the German fans finally got to see what spirit they deliver on stage.

Dúné

DÚNÉ are a young Danish band who is inspired by the seventies punk, the eighties pop and the nineties indie rock. All mixed together to indielectrock! DÚNÉ have played several concerts in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany. So they’re an experienced live band. They deliver a live show loaded with elegance, stile and high energy, and when they leave the stage it’s certain that everybody among the audience has seriously warmed up their dancing shoes, legs and auditory canal!

Music
Using a lot of guitars and keyboards at the same time, their music is a mix out of punk, pop, rock and electro. The music is balanced really well and it seems like they know what they are doing on stage. The keyboards sometimes dominate but the guitars are used very often, too. The voice of Mattias Kolstrup, the lead singer of the band, has a striking edge to it. So, it really sounds unique. ‘Robot Beat’ is a keen, tight and catchy song about writing blockade and the surrounding causes. Here is definitely a hit in infancy. ‘Go Go Valentina’ is a beautiful ballade … Here the sharp guitars and analogue synthesizer riffs really are exposed. Moreover, Kolstrup shows a more soft and sensitive part of his vocal. With this variety both in their songs and in his vocals is going to be the foundation for their upcoming career which I’m sure they are going to have. Showing us what they are able to do, I wished they would have performed longer than just 30 minutes. And as I looked into the crowd, I guess, I wasn’t the only one thinking so.

Performance
The two guitarists acted like indomitable whippers, but everybody was in constant motion on the chaotic stage, and in lead singer and songwriter Mattias Kolstrup there were traces of great potential. The repertoire is still not overly comprehensive, but on the other hand DÚNÉ performs their songs to something near perfection and it's stunning. With a Synth-Rock other bands will look wistfully at, DÚNÉ impressed everyone with their personality, charm and characteristic music skills. They came, they played and they won the hearts of everybody standing in the audience. In spite of the young age of the members, DÚNÉ had already created an interesting frame to present their music in. Only the cute little girl playing one of the keyboards was standing there, looking down on her instrument, always the same expression on her face. She knew what she is doing, definitely, but somehow she looked like she didn’t have any fun at all.

Fall Out Boy

FALL OUT BOY is an alternative rock band from Illinois/USA that formed in 2001. The band consists of Patrick Stump (lead vocals, guitar), Pete Wentz (bass, backup vocals), Joe Trohman (lead guitar) and Andy Hurley (drums). The four members of Chicago's FALL OUT BOY came together in suburban Wilmette around 2000/2001. All members had been in and out of various bands in Chicago's underground hardcore scene. They debuted with a self-released demo in 2001, followed by a split LP in May 2002 on Uprising that also featured ‘Project Rocket’. The band returned on the label in January with the mini-LP ‘Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girl’.  They eventually signed a deal with Gainesville, but also received an advance from Island Records to record their proper debut. The advance came with a right of first refusal for Island on FALL OUT BOY's next album, but it also financed the recording of ‘Take This to Your Grave’. Grave appeared in May 2003, and FALL OUT BOY garnered positive reviews for its gigs. The ambitious ‘From Under the Cork Tree’ followed in spring 2005 and reached the Top Ten of Billboard's album charts. Now they are back with their new record ‘Infinity on High’, getting more and more attention in Germany.

Music
Arriving there almost 2h earlier than we actually wanted to be, we got to the Huxley´s and were surprised by the amount of people - mostly female - waiting for the doors to be opened. Then, after DÚNÉ got done playing, the show began and the audience just freaked out as if you were at a pop concert. Drummer Andrew Hurley was shirtless, and guitarists Pete Wentz and Joseph Trohman looked as if they were going to toss or smash their instruments at any moment as they twirled around with them furiously. Moshing and crowd surfing erupted as they played songs like ‘Fashion Sense’ and the exuberant ‘Dance Dance’.

Playing a lot of the songs from their album ‘From under the Cork Tree’, the crowd started singing every single song. The mood at that time was phenomenal and nobody would get it even better. Bassist Pete Wentz always tried to talk to the people to get a connection to the fans. Surprisingly they did not even perform for 90 minutes. There were definitely some maximums during the concert. For example right at the beginning as they played their most known song ‘Sugar, we’re going down’. Standing there in front of the audience, taking the pictures, I thought they would kill me by singing that loud. That showed how much the fans were into that band. Having mostly played songs of the last album, the variety of the songs wasn’t that great but they still tried to keep up the good mood which they could. Proving what they are able to do by hitting the guitars and the drums made everybody feel like they were at a big party with great music. You noticed they know what they are doing on stage. Great solos by the lead guitar made the sound even better.

Performance
They really showed how much space there was on the stage by jumping and moving all over the place. That showed how much fun they had playing the songs for the fans. You always thought they would destroy the whole stage with all their moves but they - eventually - did not. In the middle of the concert, they suddenly stopped and had some strange fat guy coming up the stage. Looking in the faces of the audience, you could see that they didn’t have any idea what was coming up. And actually, I still don’t understand what this had to do with the show. He eventually jumped from the upper part of the stage on a table destroying it. I guess nobody knew why he was doing it and why they had him coming up the stage in general.

Continuing with a great show, FALL OUT BOY played as good as they did before. Before they played their new single ‘This ain’t a scene, it’s an arms race’, the guys told us their best cuss words, including their favorite “goddamn”. Close to the end of the show, Pete called everybody up to start a circle pit, starting with a guy from their crew. The audience did and Pete’s comment on that: “That was the best fucking circle pit in Germany I’ve ever seen”.  Having played a good show so far, they played their last song and disappeared without playing an addition or a sign of even wanting to come back on stage again. So, the over all concert didn’t even last 90 minutes, which was a pity because the fans really enjoyed the concert up to that point.
