Franzz Club, Berlin, Germany
30th October 2007
Jasmin Tabatabai

Most of us know JASMIN TABATABAI from the German movie “Bandits” and as an actress as well. Some people know her as a singer too. There weren’t many times we hear something about her but now she was travelling to different little cities in Germany to present her new album ‘I ran’. Her last stop at the tour was Berlin where she lives now. The Franzz Club is a very small room but it was filled very well. Most of the audience were women. No surprise, because JASMIN is a kind of woman that looks hard and soft at the same time and maybe many women like that.

I think it is a really clever name for her second solo album because together are the letters “IRAN”, her home country. As at the successful "Bandits" soundtrack in 1997, many of these songs have been created together with Jasmin's girl-friend and colleague Nicolette Krebitz. The melancholic song ‘Inspiration’ can also be found on the album as new recording. This song was originally composed in 2003 for a "Gala" coffee commercial. ‘On my way’, song no. 6 on the album, was originally written for Katja von Garnier's film “Iron Jawed Angels” (2004) and can be heard in the scene when the suffragettes (among others played by Hilary Swank) picketed around 1910 in front of the White House in the pouring rain for women's voting right (that's why the song was called ‘Picket In Bad Weather’ when the film was released).

‘You in my dream’ was written by JASMIN for the German road movie "Olga's Summer" (2003). On this occasion, JASMIN TABATABAI got to know the musicians Carolin Heiß and Marc Sidney Müller of the Munich band SUPERSTRINGS with whom she later on recorded the song ‘All Can Come Close’. This song was already included on the SUPERSTRINGS album ‘Speechballoon’. By the way, the song ‘Toi’ is also sung by Jasmin's girl-friend Nicolette Krebitz. Knowledge of the French language is advantageous when hearing this song and knowledge of the Persian language is not amiss when hearing the twelfth song ‘I Ran’. ;)

Music
The quality of her songs reveals itself at the second time of listening! Authenticity is what distinguishes her as a singer. It can hardly be more multi-faceted. Even if she talks about love in nearly all her songs, she is far from any kitsch sentimentalism. In fact she succeeds in handling this issue in an intimate way and in bedding her lyrics in versatile songs. Sometimes its quiet and sometimes pure rock. On that evening we could listen to a mix of old and new songs and the classics ‘Catch me!’, ‘Sad song’, ‘Blinded’ and ‘Puppet’.

Performance
JASMIN TABATABAI & band were 30 minutes too late at stage. The fans where still impatient. The first thing she did on stage was to drink from a bottle of beer. Not very nice as first “hello” for her fans. Never mind... The fans where happy to see her. She was really near to her fans and you could feel that. Like a little family. The flair in the hall was like in a jazz-club. JASMIN told us from her concert time in Vienna and she did it in an Austrian dialect. It was funny sometimes. The sound of music was in some passages not the best. The drums were too loud and drowned the singer. But for the fans it wasn’t a reason to revel.
