Album Review

Formed in the year 2000, the founding members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau released the debut album 'M83´ one year later. The first recording was followed up by the long-players 'Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts´, 'Before the Dawn heals us´, 'Digital Shades Vol. 1´ and the recent piece of work called 'Saturdays= Youth´. The French musicians´ soundscape contains electronic tunes as well as distorted guitar riffs and fragile vocals.

The next album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming' is going to be released this Friday , three years after their last full-length. The collective used the time to create plenty material spanning two CDs, starting with the intro, called 'Intro', sparkling compound of sunny atmospheres, simple beats and a splendid vocal guest appearance of ZOLA JESUS, 'Midnight City' carries a bit of the 70s spirit of disco music with it but offers enough modernity not to billed as old-fashioned. 'Reunion' abandons the established electronic vibe and features a wide-screen rock orchestration. 'Where The Boats Go' serves as the beautiful ambient lead-in to #Wait' whose fragile acoustic guitar and wistful moods suit this time of the year very well, and most importantly mine ;) Throughout its nearly 6 minutes it's building towards what I'd like to call a silent but emotionally-charged peak. Listen for yourself. There's a massive change of scenery with the next one 'Raconte-Moi Histoire...' using a jolly orchestration to underscore the inventive story told by a little girl. What starts as another one of their ambient endeavours on 'he Bright Flash' turns into upbeat mayhem while 'Soon My Friend' adds the poignant ending of the first chapter with acoustic guitar and orchestral backdrop.

'My Tears Are Becoming A Sea' opens the second disc as placid as he first one was opened with immersive soundscapes, building towards a n noise-inflicted, bombastic climax. 'New Map' keeps a similar vibe but adds a fast-paced rhythmic section we've come across a couple of times already. A melancholy piano line opens 'Splendor', a song that'll keep swinging between moments of thick orchestration, encompassing everything around, as well as stripped down-simplicity. It combines the best off both states. 'Year One, One UFO' has kind of a folklorist vibe with the synth accentuation turned down to a minimum in favour of a rather earthly sound. The album's ending as it began with serenity and grandeur, only with more pomp For fans of contemplative music the album surely is a feast. It's strength lying primarily in the interlocking ambient structures and acoustic arrangements. Those however, who are into upbeat adventures won't get a raw deal either. There's a few nice dancy compositions on the album too. They just might need a little getting used to the album's theme.
