Album Review
MORTON started out as a studio project of Max Morton, but soon turned to a full on band. They’ve released a single ‘Grimoire’ from which many songs made their way to their debut ‘Come Read The Words Forbidden’. It opens up with ‘Calling For The Storm’ underlined by symphonic elements it’s a fine opener indeed, it introduces them as competent in instrumentation and in vocals too, lyrics are your Power metal standard but luckily not too over the top, clarity is also their good point. ‘Brotherhood Of Light’ a solid harder, classic Power metal track. ‘Sleeping King’ a rather nice ballad driven in mid-tempo. ‘Losing Faith’ turns up on speed to the epic side, wild on the riffs. ‘We Are The Shades’ is the representative of the slow down song with guitars turned to their more classic sound, vocals at times exhibiting how high they can reach, which makes it a “like it or diss it” moment.
‘Oblivion’ has some nice moments on the bass, interesting song, and one that would suit having a beer or two quite nicely. ‘Grimoire’ follows it with quite an atmosphere build up; it’s one of the most evocative songs on the album. Another of that kind would be Azrael, which has a great recited narration that gives it a darker hue than ‘Grimoire’, its wonderfully menacing, foreboding song. It’s probably one of my favourites here as it shows more of their own personality, even with its abrupt ending. Closing ‘Weeping Bell’ is another cutting dark song and a great closure on this album. The songwriting throughout is quite seamless although I find their flourish is rather technical than imaginative or inventive, I’ve seen something of that only in the last two tracks. So if you were looking for something new and unique, this is not exactly it, but if your prerogative is to enjoy a solid, good quality release in the genre this might just be an advisable addition on your list.
