MY BLACK LIGHT emerged from different cover bands in 2008 to produce own material that slinked its way into debut ‘Human Maze’. Album’s music although joined under the Gothic Metal flag, takes few inspirations elsewhere in the subgenres, and overall reaches towards to being able to stand its own ground. However, the female vocal doesn’t really match the music. If they experiment with blending more sounds, which is good to distinguish them on a crowded scene, her voice remains the same - just affecting Gothic / Symphonic Metal rather than following suit and experimenting with singing as well as much as she should. In the highs it reaches rather annoying texture, comes out somewhat thin, this thinness is at times even a slight cringe inducing.
When the voice tries to be dramatic, it comes as trying rather than being so. I don’t really think it’s much of a novelty to sing a piece that would suit Death Metal vocals throughout better in attempt to be WITHIN TEMPTATION or EVANESCENCE. So as you can guess the pull between trying to be more unique and conforming to the genre at the same time spoilt my impressions of this album. In my opinion they sound better when they experiment or even be better off in a Death Metal position and should do without the elements of Gothic Metal altogether or keep it in small rather than predominant degree, and up the game on female vocals. Enjoyable debut but... Let’s just hope they’ll do better next time...
