Album Review

MIIKE SNOW may sound like an individual musician but it is a Swedish Indie pop band, founded in 2007 by a trio of producers/musicians (two of those are also known as ‘Bloodshy & Avant). As songwriters and producers they worked with such names as MADONNA, KYLIE MINOGUE, KELIS etc. In 2009 they released their own debut album and now they are presenting their follow-up ‘Happy To You’. The beginning of the first song fits aptly its name (‘Enter The Joker’s Lair) as it does feel like some kind of joke with sounds feeling like randomly let out balloons and slightly insane poppy atmosphere. Even if there’s more inventive approach on the beats and there’s some enjoyable irony at work it feels somewhat thin. The minimalism here doesn’t produce the “less is more” effect. I admit that I’m not a big fan of pop as it is, so it really has to have something special for me to get interested.

Though it is quirkier than most of the standard ware, it just failed to convince me that it has something that will remain with me beyond finishing reviewing it, it’s hard to even be engage with it during its duration as it is. The most enjoyable song is ‘Devil’s Work’ with a slightly darker tone, memorable chorus and having more of an essence. And for the other mentionable songs out of this - ‘Bavarian #1’ with its wacky fun; ‘Black Tin Box’ features LYKKE LI, whose music is one of the enjoyable and quality exceptions in the trend and has some great drumming going on, spicing it up. ‘Paddling Out’ seemed to have a faint echo of something slightly older in a memory of pop, something ‘80’s with a twist. This album is maybe going to be enjoyable to the genre’s fans with its quirkier touches, but limited even for them.
