Album Review

At first listen, they come across as a form of a cheesy pop aesthetic. A few more listens, they become a sound very familiar, resembling that of EVANESCENCE, NIGHTWISH and LACUNA COIL which is of no doubt, quite an obvious influence. What really compliments the band’s arrangement are the vocals of Angelica Rylln’s melodic bursts that is nicely combined with the opulent backing that gives them their ‘cinematic’ tone. The gracefully gothic harmonies they create really are quite ear catching; it’s well produced and executed, a nicely embellished record in a whole. The only weak figments are the lyrics and their glossy veneer, at times the lyrics don’t stand strong enough and their image is tainted with a ‘poppy-friendly’ approach that doesn’t necessarily benefit the band’s name, however this doesn’t ruin such a beautifully conceived album.

What’s fresh about THE MURDER OF MY SWEET is that they are a Scandinavian band, negating the typical dark, witch craft-esque overtones (that is well tread in their metal music industry) they favour a more symphonic glaze that adds to their overall lush grandeur. The brilliantly groovy riffs and string-based arias does indeed characterise the scope of the music, which could well fit in a gritty noir scene. They are a band that will continue to be a success in the euro-metal limelight as ‘Bye Bye Lullaby’ proves. Even from the get-go, their debut album, ‘Divanity’ was greatly received. The opening track, ‘Armageddon’ commences ‘Bye Bye Lullaby’ with a symphonic storm as the proceeding tracks maintain a level of awe with the likes of ‘Idolise’, ‘Violently Peaceful’ and ‘Kind of Lousy’. There’s plenty of promise from THE MURDER OF MY SWEET and we will hear a lot more from them considering the strength and vibrancy of ‘Bye Bye Lullaby’.
