Album Review
It took NEON ZOO seven years after their first album ‘Heaven Sin’ for their next release ‘O’ and I hope it could follow the footsteps of his predecessor. But let me start from the beginning. ‘I’m Your God’ is the introduction track for a well build and technically formed album. With its dark tone this track is quiet potent and penetrating and provides a real good entry. Much more dance driven follows ‘Purity’ which seems on the first notes almost cheerful in comparison to his predecessor but which will leave its mark. ‘Skin’ seems of the same style much more danceable than the first track, but very unusual in its technical pattern, it generates an atmosphere which lies between bizarre and sexy. The change that has already been heralded by the song ‘Skin’ is now being continued with the track ‘The Voyeur’. Dark almost lascivious creep the song into the ear and whispers of promises of different kind. ‘Haunt’ follows right on the heels and recapture the feeling from ‘Purity’. At the first glance this track fits not really to ‘The Voyeur’ but it develops in a natural way from the base and adapts to the rest of this album.
The electrifying ‘Divine’ and the hallucinogenic ‘Seethe’ follow right after to take the floor, but with the same keenness and impression as the previous album tracks. ‘Seethe’ is a great example for merging today’s music to encompass genres that are irrelevant and intrinsic to a scene and make them unusual and fresh. ‘Closing In’ recaptures the dance-ability of previous tracks and leaves a real good impression. Because of the extraordinary performance ‘The Offering’ conspires with the listener in creating a thorough, permanent link. ‘Beautiful Darkness’ is just as title suggests beautiful, and dark, however, its refinement, both obliging and devastating, makes it one of my favourite tracks. ‘Push’ concludes the album. This track treading an unusual path which could be followed in a very strange way. ‘Push’ made its own way to help this album to a worthy end and yet leave a desire for more. Another highlights are the bonus tracks which make a seamless continuation and enhance the picture which ‘O’ already provide.
This album is a real good mixture of a dark and sexy atmosphere and surely pleases one or the other. The ideas which lie behind the concept are very appealing but because of this structure this CD would be probably heard more at home.
