Album Review

NEUSCHNEE have been founded in Austria around 2006. They aim to recreate something that is already there. You know, trying a different angle on things. In their case it is the singer/songwriter genre. On their second instalment 'Bipolar', they're going another step towards perfecting the niche they've been carving out for themselves for quite a while now. There were other peers would limit their efforts to presenting everything with guitar and vocals only NEUSCHNEE base their songs on strings mostly. Why stop there already? While not using it over the entirety of the album, a track such as 'Sag mir nicht' bears strong electronic influences recalling a minimalist pop fashion as it is hardly practised any more these days. The predominant means on 'Bipolar' remain the acoustic one. The chamber-ish strings get company with the piano, drums and guitar, at the end even with a very harsh incursion of it on 'Du bist nicht allein'. The means are chosen according to what the song needs in order to unfold its intentions in appropriate ways. Together with a high lyrical bandwidth the album's becoming an elaborate affair, and something that doesn't let you explore its depth so easily.
