Album Review

ÓLÖF ARNALDS, albeit being the cousin of renowned OLAFUR ARNALDS, is an Icelandic musician in her own right and worked for years within the local music scene, most prominently collaborating with the band MÚM until 2003. 'Sudden Elevation' already is her third accomplishment as a solo artist that is completely dedicated to a special brand of folk tradition. Doing it the Icelandic way you could say. Meaning that besides the obvious and leading acoustic elements in every of the 12 little tracks on the album, there's an intangible element intermixed; something that you can sense, a breeze of mysticism and flying over ancient lands resonates therein. 'Sudden Elevation' as I see it was never intended to merely work as an entertaining backdrop. Overall, the tracks are much too calm to work well within the context. They never even branch out of their pace while everyday thoughts and incidents related to life in general are being processed in her very own way. Nothing to keep up a rocker's interest for much longer than a blink, but those who can appreciate the quieter moments and details in life will find pleasure and comfort within.
