LENKA’s new album ‘Shadows’ is an album full of lullabies, being influenced by her new living situation after she gave birth to a child. Already short after release of her second album ‘Two’ in 2011, LENKA started compiling songs for her new album, including songs from recording sessions taken place during her pregnancy and her first months as mother. This new life growing inside of her heavily influenced her music and lyrics for the new album. ‘Shadows’ presents the Australian artist grown up and more reflective, even though the album does not come up with dark songs, like the album title may impress, but with very dreamy ones. And even though the songs on the album were recorded in very different sessions, the album presents a unity when it comes to sound aesthetic and content.
LENKA impresses on ‘Shadows’ with her clear voice and wonderful, catchy melodies, proving that the artist can deliver much more than happy songs, like her hit from the Windows advertising campaign, ‘Everything at once’. Many songs on the album are calm and soothing, but anything else than boring. One of the most beautiful songs on the album is probably ‘Two Heartbeats’, being written from the perspective of a baby, even including heartbeats from LENKA’s unborn son. While ‘Heart To The Party’ is a jolly sing-a-long piece presenting the vivid side of the album, ‘After The Winter’ (with Tracy Bonham on violin) is a wonderful optimistic and comforting moment. ‘Heart To The Party’ is another faster song, inviting to dance. The album is ending again in a calm way with sad sounding ‘Nothing’ and the piano ballad ‘The Top Of Memory Lane’.
With ‘Shadows’, LENKA opens a new chapter in her musical career. Those wonderful song son the album are a bewitching collection of peaceful, tranquil pieces, in the same time calming and well-thought. LENKA perfectly manages to digest very personal issues in her songs and still being accessible for anyone, even for those who not experienced being parents (yet).
