Ever wanted PARAMORE with balls? Well, look no further, NEW YEARS DAY are your guys (and gal). Whilst helming a dark-pop edge, they have the ability to shift sounds from a Tim Burton style ambience to more menacing arrangements tinged with a Goth sheen and edgy Emo pastiche.
NEW YEARS DAY are a band you’d most expect to hear on a teen horror soundtrack; haunting atmospherics and macabre lyrics yet it’s friendly and accessible to listen to. They have proclaimed that their music is defined as “Hauntedmansioncore”, yes, a fusion of metal and… ahem, haunted houses. That does indeed sound dubious although, listening to them it does make some sense in terms of their overall sound. Ashley Costello’s vocals deliver well; intense and emotive – ingredients for a perfect female lead singer in such a genre dominated by male talent. It’s Costello’s voice that carries the music with such strength.
‘Victim to Villain’ is most certainly an invigorating listen, the opening track, ‘Do Your Worst’ really kicks it off well and blows the cobwebs off of those antiquated chandeliers but by the time you get to track 6, ‘Death of The Party’ (which is no pun intended), it all starts to drown within itself. At a length of 35 minutes long you can’t really complain because if it were to be any longer, even the spooks and ghouls would call it a night. Despite that though, they’ve definitely progressed since their MySpace and social networking days. If you’re fed up of the absence of EVANESCENCE then get yourself to the nearest creepy old house with a copy of this LP and rock it out…loud!
