Alex Warwick Kern founded LYRONIAN in 2005 and enlisted a help of Mike Kennedy. They have a debut and a mini album to their name and it’s joined by ‘Crisis’. They try to categorise their music under new trend they call “New Sense”; still you’ll be able to think of it as Synth Pop with a lashing of Gothic. Truth is that they’ve absorbed any influences pretty well to have a right to call a bit on the ticket of originality. Well, of course, the evocation of melancholy is only to be expected but it’s also a very catchy music that uplifts whatever sadness there is. It’s not overworked but it’s not a barren soundscape either.
In an album that starts with ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ (‘Goodbye’) you should probably expect some irony. It’s also the one of the two songs sung in German. Though the real gem of the album is ‘Long Live The King’ with its floor-tapping catchiness and giant refrain, a song of grander proportions, if you’re usually for guillotining the royals you may reconsider as it’s worthy to sing along too. Yet the same can pretty much go for all the rest of the songs, some are quieter like the following ‘Crisis’ yet they are still quite intense; some are still harder and more EBM-sound-calling like ‘Silver Arrow’. And let’s mention also the “balladry” ‘I’m So Sorry’, emotive and beautiful indeed yet absolutely not cheesy.
The vocals work through very well, with this mirror-hall effect. Lyrics again are not overworked but they are pleasant with a good feel for storytelling and getting down to a clear communication. And above all one of those ‘it’s a pleasure to listen to’ kinds of albums that will leave its mark on memory and won’t tire with repeated listens. One can only hope that they’ll anchor themselves firmly on the scene - there’s a feeling of freshness in LYRONIAN.
