Album Review

MACHINE HEAD is an American Thrash Metal band, founded in 1991. So far, they have released eight studio records, the latest one ‘Bloodstone & Diamonds’ marking their first release on Nuclear Blast Records. With ‘Bloodstone & Diamonds’, MACHINE HEAD present an album that is much more entertaining and straight-forward than their previous effort ‘Unto The Locust’. The powerful, energetic and at the same time programmatic opener ‘Now We Die’ does not only sum up the direct and harsh lyrics of the band, but also illustrates their versatile blending of groove, technical riffs and catchy melodies.

‘Ghost Will Haunt My Bones’ or ‘Night Of Long Knives’ offer fast but diverse Thrash Metal in typical MACHINE HEAD manner, whereas ‘Sail Into The Black’ forms an interesting and unexpected departure into more melodic spheres. ‘In Comes The Flood’ illustrates the band’s ability for creating catchy and at the same time haunting songs and ‘Damage Inside’ surprises the listener with mere acoustic and yet beautiful, clean vocals. In a nutshell, there is not much to be said about ‘Bloodstone & Diamonds’, except that it is an entertaining, diverse album, which plays with different melodies, song structures and thus hardly gets boring.
