Album Review

Is there still political music in these days that is free from feigned moral and conceited self-staging? Music with a clear and blunt message, remonstrating and demonstrating, taking up the cause of content instead of media-hyped spectacles and egos dressed in golden robes? Any heirs of the 60´s and 70´s protest songs? I think the three heads behind THE LAST INTERNATIONALE would reply to these questions with the turning up of the amplifier volume for facing you with their angry Hard-Garage-Blues Rock, removing any doubt that the only possible answer can be a "Yes". So I think it´s no accident that no one less than Tom Morello, designated guitar player of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE (another band, which could easily answer the questions above!) became aware of the New York´s threesome, introduced them to his drumming band mate Brad Wilk (who immediately joined in) and handed them over to Brendan O`Brien, who worked together with names like RATM, PEARL JAM & NEUL YOUNG) to produce their debut ‘We Will Reign’.

So the outcome of these ways crossing is an 10 track album filled with bracing energy, a rough and unaffected sonic surface and a convincing political attitude, exuding more conviction and stances than all the canned ‘...Aid’ rackets together. It is the mixture of Delila Paz´ stunning vocals, which flow, yell and spit throughout the songs, flanked by hard and growling guitars, thrusting drums and colour-coordinated organ and piano sounds (it seems no secret that folk music of the sixties had an indelible influence on the band). But even without acoustic fists the musical chemistry works as shown in the acoustic and more melancholic tunes, finding home in the albums second half (maybe the price to pay for signing to a major label?), like the pathetic ‘Battleground’ or Burt Bacharach´s ‘Baby it's You’. So everybody who likes straight and handmade rock music and who's able to focus on bones and brain in equal measure should give ‘We Will Reign’ a listen!
