Album Review

I discovered KITE with the EP ‘V’ and really loved the work of this Swedish duet. With this 6th EP, simply entitled ‘VI’, KITE is pursuing its EP Format only policy. The 8mn48 opener, ‘Up For Life’, sets the landscape : some deep, dark, melancholic climax driven by this unique voice, supported by choirs (women and/or child voices). There's no revolution compared to the previous EP.  KITE already found a very unique universe that reminded me at the time of M83 meeting ZOLA JESUS (and still does)... They “just” go further away from the pop format (three of the tracks are above five minutes).

‘It's Ours’ is a bit more “approachable” for those used to the pop format. Driven by a solid synth gimmick, strong synth basses and their usual 80's sounding drum machine. ‘Count The Days’ is the shortest track, three minutes-ish, mid tempo, very syncopated vocals and doesn't have real chorus. ‘True Colours’ is closer to the mood of ‘Up For Live’, with some large instrumental bits allowing synths to develop some very melodic and melancholic moods. The EP ends on the 6 min 50 ‘Nocturne’. The title says it all. No drum rhythm (apart from some toms and cymbals) for the first half of the song, a vocoded voice upon panoramic synth pads giving a real cinematographic feel (kind of VANGELIS).

This is definitely not an easy EP to enter in. It took me weeks, even though I loved the previous one, to find the keys of this sound-scape. But once you're in, once you've taken the time to sit and do nothing else than listen to it, you can let yourself drive by this small journey into KITE's unique universe
